All of my friends are going back to school for part of the week, doing hybrid learning. I have to do remote, and I am afraid that I will miss out on so much stuff with my friends and with my school. How do I make sure that I'm not left out when I come back? -Anonymous
It’s totally understandable that this would be something you’re worried about, I think a lot of people are feeling the same way.
My dad is a high school teacher, so I know a lot about what’s going on ‘behind the scenes.’ He’s teaching in person, and online, so hopefully I can be of some help!
I know it might seem like you’re going to miss out on getting to see your friends in person and hanging out with them, but in all honesty, you probably won’t. I know that in most schools, kids have to eat lunch in their classroom and aren’t allowed to hangout between classes. That combined with masks and social distancing, there’s a good chance that no one is going to be talking and hanging out much anyway, and your friends will probably wait until after school to get together, when you could join them too.
Be clear with your friends. Explain to them that you’re worried about not getting to hangout with them much, and missing out on stuff. If they’re good friends, they’ll understand, and will do their best to stay in touch and include you in anything that they do after school. Work together with them to make a plan to still hangout and stay in touch, even if it’s socially distanced or online. Find times that work for everyone to video call, that way you can make sure you don’t lose those friendships.
As for missing out on stuff with school itself, your teachers and school are going to do everything they can to make sure everyone gets what they need, whether it’s help with a class or anything else. Where my dad works, even though some of the kids are coming in person, most things are online, instead of papers and stuff, so if that’s the case in your school, that part will be the same for everyone, whether you’re going online or in person.
Since I don’t know anything about your school I can’t say for sure, but they are probably preparing to go all online if they need to because of Covid, so there’s a chance that everyone might end up online anyway. Of course, this all depends on your school since they’re all a little different, but for the most part they’re all probably pretty similar.
And lastly, just remember that this is new for everyone. You’re not the only one worried about these things, and everyone is doing the best that they can. Try not to stress too much, everything will work out in the end. <3
