In school and by myself, I learn about a lot of bad things happening in the world (the environment crisis; food apartheid; wars; etc.). I want to do things on my own to help combat these issues, but I just don’t know how and then I don’t do anything. I know that I am in a place of privilege, and I want my impact on the world to be a positive one. Do you have any ideas for how I can be more of an activist for issues I care about? - Anonymous
This is an excellant question, and I hope I'm able to help you out and give you some helpful information.
First of all, I think it's great that you want to be more of an activist, and that you want to do something about these very real and very hard problems that are happening in the world right now. The world always needs more passionate and eager people who want to help!
What I would recommend doing is:
-Become invloved locally, if possible. Is there a climate strike happening nearby? If so, can you join in? If there isn't a strike, can you organize one? (It is safe to strike outside, so long as you're distanced) Can you donate time or supplies to a food pantry? Are there organizations that you can become invloved with? Do some research in your area, and see what comes up locally. You might be surprised!
-Raise awareness. There are a lot of ways to raise awareness about the issues that are happening right now, and not just on social media, although that is certainly a good method. If you have social media, you can raise awareness on the platforms that you have, be that by sharing posts, promoting local organizations, sharing links to petitions/websites, or something else. Outside of social media, you can look up petitions to sign, and then tell your friends/family to do the same; If you have money you can donate, you can research organizations that help combat the issues you're passionate about, and donate to them. Or if you can't donate, encourage your friends to donate; You can also have conversations with people about these issues, and raise awareness that way. Word-of-mouth is a great way to spread the word!
-Take action. Want to help fight the climate crisis? Look up ways that you can do your part to help the planet, even if they're small. Some ideas are: Pick up trash whenever you see it, and put it in a trash can, use a reusable water bottle, recycle/compost whenever possible, use less plastic, shop second hand, eat organically when you can, and use more low/zero waste products. Apply this kind of thinking to the other issues that you're passionate about, and I'm sure that you can find plenty of small (or not so small!) ways to take action against the issues that you want to help fight against.
-Get others invloved. Ask your friends and family to help you, and get them on board with what you're doing. Encourage them to also raise awarenes and take action, and to encourage their friends and family to do the same. The more poeple taking action, the better - and it can be fun when your friends are invloved with what you're working towards. Start a club at school for one of the issues you care about - you can probably meet outside and be safe, at least for a while. It's a great way to get others involved, and to get the word out.
I hope these tips helped some, and I hope you're able to find a way that works for you, to support the causes you care about. And remember: There is no right or wrong way to be an activist. Whatever you're able to do is just fine, even if it's something very small. Just keep being passionate, and keep fighting for what you believe in. <3
