Playing Pretend

Do you like to pretend? What do you pretend? When, where, how, and with who? Do you use props (costumes, etc.), or just imagination? Do you ever feel pressured to stop pretending? Share your make-believe adventures!

Some of my favorite memories from when I was younger involved:

  • Running a bird flight school
  • Fighting crime in my secret identity of Maya the superhero, battling my arch-nemesis Annie (my sister's secret identity)
  • Transforming into a fairy
  • Protecting my youngest sister from the Monsters (aka my other sisters xD) who regularly tried to kidnap her
  • Becoming my favorite fictional characters
  • Communing with my wood nymph friends
  • Working as a Season Sorceress, responsible for magically controlling weather all around the world
  • ... and much, much more

Yes, I lived an extremely busy life. xD Sadly, nowadays I don't pretend quite as much as I used to, but I still love doing it from time to time! There's nothing quite like pretend games/playing make-believe—you can be anything or anyone or anywhere or anytime you want. Personally, I find that pretty amazing.

Bonus: Below, check out an excerpt from NMG's November/December 2011 "The Power of Pretend" issue below, in which then-girls responded to a survey to share their stories about pretending! Can you relate to some of these answers? Or are your make-believe experiences different?

  • I love pretending! I like dressing up, but some of my favorite stuff to pretend is with my dolls, and I also love role play games with my family as well as the NMG ones. I like to pretend that my dolls are my kids and my sisters are her kids.
  • I like to pretend I have my dolls with me and act something out
  • This is the most middle-active message board. (It's not the most popular, not the least popular, it's the board that's in the exact middle).
  • I love play pretending and I do it a lot to make a task more fun. Our school is grades k-12 so it is quite large. My friend and I love being there after school just to role play.
I wish more people understood that it is not just for littler kids!!!!
  • I like to pretend!!! I do it all the time!!
  • I love playing pretend! I do all sorts of stuff, like pretending I'm a fortune teller and tons of other stuff.
  • I love playing pretend! I tell stories while doing other things. I wander around while telling them and I have a lot of dress up stuff. I love doing that kind of thing! I might be a princess or a plain person. I might be a knight or anything else! It could be inspired by a movie or book. It could be my own invention.
  • I love to pretend! I pretend all sorts of things, like realistic fiction games, dragon games and really, just outright daydreaming!
  • i used to, i don't really act stuff out anymore but that doesn't mean i don't imagine stuff? like i imagine my ocs doing stuff i just don't act it out (other than facial expressions sometimes, or subconsciously moving my arms or whatever)

Online Schoolwork Help

When I’m doing online schoolwork, it’s really easy to get off task. How can I keep myself from procrastinating?     —Anonymous  Hi! Procrastination and distraction are both things I’ve struggled with in the past, so speaking as someone who’s been homeschooled my whole life (not just since COVID!), and has *mostly* conquered these issues, I’ll do my best to help! First, prioritizing. There is only so much time in the day, so we need to figure out what are the most important things to do in that…

Staying Committed to a Story

I find it really hard to keep motivated while writing. I often am really excited about a story I start writing, but after a couple paragraphs I lose motivation and never continue the story. Any advice? -Anonymous I completely understand this! I am currently in the process of trying to stick to the longest story I’ve ever attempted. In the past, I’ve stuck to poetry and short stories for this very reason, but I’m trying to push myself with this project during quarantine! Here are a few tips…

Getting Through Quarantine Without Seeing Friends

How do I get through the corona quarantine without seeing my friends? -Sophia   Ah, the question of the season! I’m really glad you asked this, Sophia, because it’s a very important topic that so many of us are struggling with right now.  First, I would like to direct you to a blog post about staying connected in quarantine that one of my awesome fellow S2S mentors, Paige, wrote just a few days ago! She already did a great job on this topic, so this won’t be a super detailed answer, but you…

Crushes & Coming Out!

So I was wondering how to give a letter to your crush. even though they already know it's you. Please know that these are all very personal things and that you ultimately get to make the decision on what you'd like to do! It's not up to me, your friends,…

Ask A Girl: Need advice? Give great advice? We help each other! Ask your questions or answer any of the questions already here. Your post will appear in a day or two, so check back often. We've had many girls ask if their questions can be anonymous, and that is not possible on this website. We want you to know that girls in NMG can trust each other, even with embarrassing questions. And if you want to, you can change your user name to a "not real" name that will then also be used in the magazine if your Ask A Girl question is published.

Letters To Luna: I'm Luna, the spirit of New Moon. Write a letter to me with your opinions and suggestions about the magazine and website. I love to read all your notes! Because I get so many letters, I can't reply online. But a select few letters get published in each issue!

Body & Feelings: Body image, mood swings, puberty, your first period, and so much more! The information girls need!

Check It Out: Share your rants and raves about books, magazines, movies, products, music, ads, tv, internet and more. Love it? Hate it? Let us know!

For The Curious: How does stuff in our world happen? Post and ask about experiments, tech, coding, math,  science, engineering, and more!  It's all about the weird, wonderful, and wacky! Be curious and be surprised.

Go Girls & Women Change the World: Amazing girls and women make the world a better place every day. Tell us about who you admire - now and from the past.  These don't have to be people who are already famous!

How Aggravating & Howl at the Moon: Tell us when you see something that's unfair to girls and women -you can vent about it here! And, Howl out your accomplishments and the things that make you proud as a person and a girl!

Love Remembers: Whether it's losing a beloved pet or a cherished person, loss is painful and can be difficult to cope with. But talking about our loved ones and keeping their memories alive can help. Share your beautiful memories here.

Random Stuff: Want a place to be silly, start message board games, or talk about stuff that doesn't fit into the other categories? Then check out this message board!

Role Play: Do you like role playing games? RPG’s are games where players (that’s you!) play the roles of characters in a fictional setting and have all kinds of adventures. See where the stories take you!

Voice Box: We can have different opinions and still be friends and listen respectfully to each other. We're interested to learn about other people's points of view and we don't have to try to convince them to think like we do. This is where we share opinions about issues that are important to us.

Contests & Games: Do you love creating new contests or games for everyone to play? Do you love playing in them? This is the place for you to make your own contests and games and invite everyone to participate! Remember, just like everywhere else on NMGMembers.com, if you make a contest or game, it must be open to everyone who wants to join in!
