In case you didn't know, Maya was a poet, a singer, a memoirist, and a civil rights activist. She has recieved many awards and written numerous books, the first and maybe most famous being "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings". Maya is also very well known for her profound poems, including Still, I Rise, Caged Bird, Woman Work, Phenomenal Women, Touched by an Angel, and many, many more. Maya has been memorialized in many ways, from an epic iPhone commercial to many statues across the globe depicting her and her work.
Maya Angelou was, and still is a major part of our culture and lives. Let's honor that by celebrating her birthday and acknowledging her hard work in life.
