Lately - as I know many people have been - I've been very disturbed by a lot of the things going on in this country and in the world. It seems like whenever I hear the news there's something new to be upset about, and I just find all of this that's been happening very sad and frightening.
But what I've been thinking about is that I haven't actually been doing anything to change what's happening. I just sit at home as events play out and talk and think about how awful they are, but I'm not doing any good in doing so. And I feel bad about being so inactive and hypocritical, because I realize that it doesn't matter how much I complain - if I don't do something more, it's not going to make any difference at all.
So I'd kind of like to do something more, to get involved with helping somehow or other. The only thing is, I'm not sure how. I know about donating money to programs/organizations that support the things I think are important (like the ACLU, which my family donates to), and I know about attending marches (we're hoping that we'll be able to make it to one soon) for worthy causes. Other than that, though, I'm not certain what to do.
Are you involved with any type of activist work, or do you have any more small-scale ways of making a difference that you could recommend? If you have any suggestions to look into, I'd really appreciate it. I know that I'm only one 16-year-old girl, and the chances that I'd really be able to change anything in a real way are very small, but I want to try, so that, if nothing else, I can at least feel that I'm doing my part.
Thank you! :)
